Cloudflare Hyperdrive MySQL support reaches general availability
Cloudflare's Hyperdrive connection pooler has graduated its MySQL support from beta to general availability after resolving several protocol and encoding bugs.
Summary
Cloudflare has announced the general availability of MySQL support for Hyperdrive, its distributed database connection pooler for Cloudflare Workers. The transition from beta to GA involved resolving 20 bugs, including critical issues with character set encoding and a rare caching bug. Hyperdrive reduces latency by maintaining warm connections and caching common queries on Cloudflare's global network.
Technical challenges in MySQL implementation
- Fixed emoji support by switching from the deprecated utf8 (utf8mb3) alias to utf8mb4 to support 4-byte Unicode code points.
- Resolved encoding resets caused by the COM_RESET_CONNECTION command, which reverted connections to server defaults (e.g., latin1) instead of the negotiated charset.
- Addressed a rare (0.001% occurrence) bug where caching enabled instances returned empty responses due to complexities in the split Client/Endpoint architecture.
- Implemented capability translation to manage desynchronization between Worker-facing MySQL capabilities and origin database capabilities.
Why it matters
This release allows serverless developers using Cloudflare Workers to connect to MySQL databases with significantly lower latency and reduced connection overhead.
