Calibre 9.17 adds JPEG XL cover support, faster e-book conversion
Key Takeaway
Calibre 9.17 introduces JPEG XL image support for e-book cover conversion and improves conversion speed for MOBI, AZW3 and PDB formats.
Summary
Calibre 9.17 is now available as a free download. The open-source e-book manager adds JPEG XL support specifically for cover image conversion, and speeds up conversion to Amazon's MOBI and AZW3 formats as well as PDB. These are incremental improvements to a widely used tool for managing digital libraries.
What changed in Calibre 9.17
- JPEG XL support: Newly added for e-book cover conversion, not general image handling
- Faster conversion: MOBI, AZW3 and PDB output formats see performance improvements
- Release cadence: Follows Calibre's typical frequent point-release schedule
Why it matters
JPEG XL adoption in Calibre may encourage publishers and archivists to use the royalty-free format for cover images, though browser support for the format remains uneven.
