M5Stack PaperDIY kits update e-paper dev board with ESP32-S3
M5Stack's PaperDIY series replaces the 2020 M5Paper with an ESP32-S3, 16-level grayscale 4.7-inch e-paper display, and two kit options starting at $25.
Summary
M5Stack has launched the PaperDIY series as a successor to its 2020 M5Paper development kit. The new boards pair an Espressif ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R8 module with a 4.7-inch 960×540 e-paper display supporting 16 grayscale levels. Two versions are offered: a $25 Assembly Kit for custom integration and a $29.90 Complete Kit in a 3D-printed enclosure. Both include 8MB PSRAM, 16MB flash, microSD slot, 140mAh battery, and a custom M5PM1 power management chip.
What's new in PaperDIY vs. original M5Paper
- MCU upgrade: ESP32-S3 replaces the original generic ESP32, adding AI/vector instructions and improved security features
- Display: 4.7-inch ED047TC1 e-paper panel with 16-level grayscale via 8-bit parallel interface; same panel as LILYGO T5 4.7-inch E-Paper S3 Pro
- Removed features: Touchscreen and sensors from the original M5Paper are dropped
- Power: Custom M5PM1 PMIC manages battery, USB voltage, and e-paper boost circuit; 140mAh lithium battery
- Consumption: 40.95mA at 4.2V with peaks to 161mA
- Expansion: 2x FPC 0.5mm 12-pin interfaces exposing I2S and SPI signals
- Software: Arduino IDE support via M5Unified and M5GFX libraries; ESP-IDF factory firmware with examples; M5PM1 library for power management; WebBurner flashing supported; UiFlow not yet mentioned
Why it matters
The sub-$30 price point and open documentation including schematics and enclosure files position PaperDIY as a competitive option for low-power, sunlight-readable display projects in the maker and IoT space, directly challenging LILYGO's similar offering.
