ZiroEDA ports KiCad 10 to browser as TypeScript rewrite
Developer Akshay Rukade has created ZiroEDA, a browser-based TypeScript port of KiCad 10.0.6 that runs the schematic editor, PCB editor, interactive router, and design rule checkers without installation.
Summary
ZiroEDA reimplements KiCad 10.0.6's C++ codebase in TypeScript for browser execution. It supports opening, editing, and saving .kicad_pro files with compatibility verified against kicad-cli. The project includes end-to-end encryption for projects but remains incomplete with some original dialogs still missing. Source code is available on GitHub.
What ZiroEDA implements and what remains
- Full port scope: Schematic editor, PCB editor, interactive router, electrical rule checker (ERC), and design rule checker (DRC) all run in-browser
- File compatibility: Opens and saves standard
.kicad_profiles; zone fills tested vertex-identical against KiCad's own output usingkicad-cli - Implementation: Direct TypeScript translation of KiCad 10.0.6 C++ source, not a wrapper or emulation layer
- Current gaps: Some dialogs from the original KiCad interface are not yet implemented
- Security claim: Projects are described as end-to-end encrypted, though the source cautions against use for sensitive material
Why it matters
Browser-based EDA tools lower barriers for users on locked-down systems or Chromebooks, and could expand KiCad's reach in educational and corporate environments where software installation is restricted. The direct source port approach may also attract contributors interested in how KiCad's algorithms translate to web-native implementations.
