LILYGO T-Display K230 handheld RISC-V dev kit ships with AMOLED, LoRa, optional LTE-M keyboard
LILYGO's $150 handheld pairs Canaan's Kendryte K230 dual-core RISC-V SoC with a 4.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen, built-in AI accelerator, and modular keyboard expansion adding cellular and GNSS connectivity.
Summary
LILYGO has released the T-Display K230, a handheld development kit built around Canaan's Kendryte K230 dual-core 64-bit RISC-V processor. The device targets embedded AI, remote monitoring, and wireless communication applications with a 4.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 1GB LPDDR4 RAM, HDMI output, Ethernet, WiFi 4, and a choice of SX1262 or LR2021 LoRa transceivers. An optional detachable QWERTY keyboard adds battery power and can be equipped with a Nordic nRF9151 SiP for LTE-M, NB-IoT, and GNSS connectivity.
The Kendryte K230 SoC combines a 1.6GHz RISC-V core with Vector Extension 1.0 and a 800MHz RV64GCB-compatible core, alongside a KPU AI accelerator supporting INT8/INT16 inference for frameworks including TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ONNX. Software support spans the Kendryte K230 Linux SDK, CanMV/RT-Smart firmware, and an LVGL-based application launcher, with experimental Meshtastic and LoRaWAN support in newer Linux builds. LILYGO publishes source code, firmware, and build instructions on GitHub.
K230 SoC architecture and expansion design
- Kendryte K230 SoC: Dual-core 64-bit RISC-V configuration with a 1.6GHz primary core (RVV 1.0, FPU) and 800MHz secondary core (RV64GCB), plus dedicated KPU AI accelerator, 2.5D GPU, 3D depth processing engine, and H.264/H.265 VPU.
- AI inference performance: KPU benchmarks claim ResNet-50 at 85fps, MobileNet-v2 at 670fps, and YOLOv5S at 38fps, all at INT8 precision, with compatibility for TVM, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and ONNX models.
- Display and camera subsystem: 4.1-inch 568×123 AMOLED with RM69A10 driver and GT9895 touch controller over MIPI DSI; 2MP GC2093 camera with 1080p support, rotatable module, and up to three MIPI CSI interfaces on the bare board.
- Wireless and wired I/O: RTL8189 WiFi 4, optional nRF52840 for Bluetooth LE, Semtech SX1262 or LR2021 LoRa (868-940 MHz range), 10/100 Ethernet via RTL8152B, and optional nRF9151 for LTE-M/NB-IoT and GNSS.
- Keyboard expansion: 24-pin docking connector attaches a TCA8418-controlled backlit QWERTY keyboard with XL9555 GPIO expander, dual 21700 battery holders, BQ25896 charging IC, and BQ27220 fuel gauge; nRF9151 variant adds SIM slot and cellular/GNSS antennas.
Why it matters
The T-Display K230 fills a gap between smartphone-style ESP32 kits and conventional headless RISC-V boards by offering a Linux-capable handheld form factor with integrated AI acceleration and long-range wireless options. For embedded developers and open hardware enthusiasts, the published GitHub sources and Linux SDK support reduce vendor lock-in, while the modular keyboard with cellular expansion enables rapid prototyping for field-deployed IoT and edge AI applications without custom hardware design.
